Hello!
Welcome to our first grade webpage. On our classroom webpage you can find updates about what your child will be learning this school year. You will also be able to find out about exciting events that will be taking place in our classroom. 

This school year we will be learning a lot of new skills, and we will be doing a lot of exciting activities!

 

Our Daily Schedule:
8:45-9:05 Arrival, Breakfast, Morning Work
9:05-10:00 Reading (Whole group instruction)
10:00-11:15 Phonics (Small group instruction)
11:15-11:30 Calendar Math
11:30-12:00 Lunch
12:00-12:15 Recess
12:15-1:15 Math
1:25-2:15 Special
2:15-3:05 Social Studies/Science/Health
3:05-3:20 Pack Up
3:20-3:45 Dismissal

Homework:
Each week a homework packet will be sent home every Monday for the students to complete. The packet consists of reading, writing, and math activities that reinforce the concepts and skills introduced in class. The students may space out the activities and complete them throughout the week or they may complete the entire packet in one night. Please encourage your student to practice reading the oral reading fluency passage and their assigned sight words each night in order to build effective reading skills. Homework packets are due on Friday.

Students should also select a book of choice to read for fifteen minutes each night in order to practice and build oral reading fluency.

During the fourth quarter, the students are learning various three letter blends that make up the various sounds in words. The students are applying the letter blends introduced on a daily basis in order to read and write words with accuracy. They are are also working on reading sight words that appear in everyday texts. The students are continuing to work on reading grade level texts with fluency (at an accurate rate with proper tone).

In reading class, the students are studying the unit Together We Can! The students are reading nonfiction texts about people who help each other. By reading these texts, the students are learning how we can help each other on a daily basis. The students have also been learning about how text features provide more information and support the main topic within a given selection.

Math Class:Math.png
The students are currently studying geometry (the study of shapes). They learning about the attributes of various three dimensional shapes. Be sure to ask your student what they know about three dimensional shapes (cube, cone, sphere, triangular prism, and rectangular prism).

The students are studying the science unit Nurturing Nature. During this unit, the students  are performing various tasks to learn reasons why the Checkered Spot Butterfly is becoming extinct. They will also be writing a letter about ways we can help save the Checker Spot Butterfly.

Hello! My name is Mrs. Caplan (Ms. Richmond). Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I graduated from Stevenson University in 2010 with a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. This is my second year teaching first grade at Johnnycake. I love teaching first grade, and I enjoy watching my students learn and grow each day.
